Topic Refinement

The podcast pitch is not only a requirement to create a podcast, but also helps to refine and decide one's topic. When creating the pitch, you are forced to consider the perspective of an audience much sooner; it becomes more of a priority to clarify and simplify your intentions when you know another pair of eyes will be viewing your work. This prevents you from continuing your podcast to its completion only to discover at the very end how unclear and broad or even pointless your topic really is. I think the whole "pitch" concept can be applied pretty effectively to essay writing. Essays require a narrow, concise topic. Using the techniques associated with podcast pitching you can develop a stronger thesis.
My refined show idea is a discussion about whether it is appropriate to tell a stranger to smile. My topic was refined to focus on "strangers" because telling people to smile in general can be appropriate depending on the context. I discovered this necessary refinement while creating my podcast pitch! That's just one example of how useful the exercise was for me. Now, on to the next task!
