Digging Deeper

Throughout my research, I have found many popular and scholarly sources on my subject in online newspapers, online news sites and journalist articles concerning the negative response to Russia because of the Russian/Ukrainian relations concerning the Maiden revolution. The Maiden events definitely have influence on how the rest of the world perceives Russia and the Olympics in Sochi. On the actual topic of the Sochi Olympics scandals I have also had much luck with access to online material, as these are all events currently in the world news spotlight.

I started my research on Google to see what scandals have been mentioned and what other things are generally being said overall about my topic's key-words like Ukrainian Revolution 2014 and Sochi Olympics scandals. Then I started looking up legitimate news sites and newspaper websites for circulating news. Also, I went to Google Scholar to look up scholarly information.

Digging Deeper

Hello everyone,

So the rigorous research process continues. Prior to beginning my research, I created an outline of questions I must answer in order for this podcast to be successful. After our most recent lecture, the concept of ‘knowns’ and ‘unkowns’ is making me take a whole new approach in terms of research.

So far, I have found two scholarly articles from the Worldwide Political Science Abstracts section of the Security Studies Database. I was successful in finding information pertaining to the NSA, its history, and its methods of surveillance.

Scholarly Sources (so far)

Wong, Katherine. “The NSA Terrorist Surveillance Program.” Harvard Journal on Legislation 43.2 (2006): 517-534. Print.

Grundel, Olaf. “NSA. Anatomy of the Most Powerful Intelligence Service in the World.” WeltTrends. 51.1 (2006): 161-164. Print.

What I am looking for in my scholarly sources is documented cases and detailed accounts as to how the NSA’s surveillance tactics infringe on the privacy of an individual. I will be examining sources found in the Information Technology and Political Science databases as well, to examine the technological and political implications of such surveillance methods.

These are the popular sources I have gathered thus far:

Cornwell, Rupert. “Edward Snowden is a modern American hero.” The Independent. 10 June 2013: A2. Print.

Runciman, David. “The Snowden Files by Luke Harding-review.” The Guardian. 13 February 2014: G4. Print.

I will be looking for more popular articles on US National Security and National Defence. I may study NPR’s political podcast entitled, “Intelligence Squared.” This podcast examines all global political controversies making news today. I will continue to find more articles from The Guardian, as they have an entire section dedicated to Edward Snowden.

Reading week is about to begin. Time to get some serious research done!

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of reading and taking notes on the sources that I have found.

Scholarly Sources:

-          I wrote “language change” and “English” in EBSCO and found the following article:  TELEVISION CAN ALSO BE A FACTOR IN LANGUAGE CHANGE: EVIDENCE FROM AN URBAN DIALECT.
(This will give some information on language change and what causes it. But I still need to find more information as to how language change affects writers? So this article will be used to understand “language change” but may not be used as a source).

-          I also have an article on “Language Change” from the National Science Foundation

So I am looking in journal article and in books for scholarly sources. Also, I am looking under the fields of humanities and psychology. I have found some information, however I still need to find how language change affect writers?

Popular Sources:

- I found a podcast on Spark: Beauty and Brains, Beautiful Sound, Because Noun, 24-hour Music, Dramatizing the Internet, and Photo Organization.
  • This podcast provides cultural implication of the “because noun” phrase and this is helpful.

- Also this podcast referenced a blog post “All things Linguistic.” This blog has information on the “because noun phrase.” (This is Gretchen McCulloch's blog post who is a Linguistics M.A. grad from McGill University).

- I even have Geoff Pullum’s article on the “because noun phrase” which I will use as a primary source.

So I am looking at podcasts, blog posts and newspaper articles for popular sources. I am looking for information under the field of English and linguistics.

Research and note taking is still going on!
