The pitch
exercise did help me refine my idea for my podcast. I think that creating a
pitch or a proposal as a pre-writing exercise is incredibly useful for any
assignment. Writing with constraints forces a writer to produce a focused idea.
It helps the writer choose what information is most important and to find a
definite direction for writing.
My refined
show idea is to look for information to create a narrative that would engage
the Freakonomics audience. In my
pitch, I related my topic to the audience with a question, personalized it with
an anecdote, which lead to the research question. With this, it allowed me to
refine my idea to three topics I want to include in my podcast: the current
smoking trends, production of cigarettes and anti-smoking advertisements, and
personal accounts of smokers and their opinions of these anti-smoking ads.
So, from the
pitch assignment, I have focused what I need to research due to the fact that I
had to focus my topic for an audience.
