Week One: Introductions [Ian Tushingham, W14]

Hi my name is Ian and I'm a second year professional writing major! I spent a year at University of Ottawa studying political science and philosophy before I transferred to York two years ago, and after three years in post-secondary education I've learned one thing about research: It is, for me, by far the most time consuming part of writing a paper. I'm interested in learning how to quickly seek out very specific information from a swath of sources across the internet and various libraries, instead of mindlessly cruising through Google searches.

I've never used Refworks or Zotero but they sound like useful tools. Recently I've been researching and writing papers on climate change in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. With substantially less ice packing (build up of impenetrable ice) than in previous years, the government has been exploring the possibility of establishing a year-round international trade route spanning from Alaska to Greenland. Lately I've been gathering information on the risks associated with this, the possible economic future it holds, and Canada's somewhat questionable sovereignty over this waterway. On my own time I've researched everything from the American Civil War to car engine mechanics, usually on Wikipedia...I spend a lot of time looking up random topics on Wikipedia.

I don't have any experience with radio or podcasts, but I have spent countless hours playing around with different recording programs so I'm excited to use those again if possible. I'm considering creating a podcast similar to On the Media. I like to examine what news sources are leaving out when they're covering a story, and how news sources manipulate and distort evidence.
