Alison Lyn, W14: Topic Selection

The podcast that I would like to emulate is “A Rising Tide, the Doctor’s Scribe, Sparky in the Operating Table” on The Science Times. I choose this podcast because I enjoy science writing and thought that in order to keep audiences interested I would write about something in the scientific community that they did not know and possible what to find out about.

This podcast had a casual and informative style that really kept me interested in what he was saying. He also had a nice pace and did not take the topics too seriously which it kept the topics lighter and made it not seem to scientific and hard to reach. The topics on the podcast was another reason I chose to emulate it because it seemed more of social scientific problems or issues rather than standard science problem that many people would not be interested in.

What I have chosen to do as my podcast will be an extension on one of the topics that was covered in the “A Rising Tide, the Doctor’s Scribe, Sparky in the Operating Table” podcast. It will be “Sparky on the Operating Table”, which is when animals have cosmetic surgery. I choose to do this only because I have never heard of owner of pets arranging their animals to have cosmetic surgery. Even though I am not necessarily an animal person, I found it very interesting and hope to bring some new information to this issue/topic.

I did not need to use Spark to help me decide on a topic to choose because within the podcast I found a topic that caught my interest.  I did look at the site before I heard the podcast just to see whether or not I could find a topic, but I did not find it helpful. My opinion of the site is that if you really need help in narrowing your topic and finding a research topic, is to do something that you are truly interested in and know that through the whole process you will not end up hating the topic and wanting to do something else.
